'I'm really proud of studying at ANU': Postgraduate student Minh Nguyen Thanh
International postgraduate student Minh Nguyen Thanh came from Quang Ninh, Vietnam to study a Master of Public Policy with the Crawford School of Public Policy at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. He shares his rewarding experiences during his time studying with us.
What has your experience living in Canberra been like?
When I think about my time in Canberra, I find a lot to be happy about. One of the best things is studying at the Australian National University (ANU), one of the best universities in the world. It's something I'm really proud of.
Canberra is also a great place for art and history. The city is full of national museums and art galleries that show how rich and exciting our culture is. I've learned so much by just visiting these places. Another thing I love about Canberra is its natural beauty. It's a beautiful city to explore, no matter what season it is. Each season brings something new and interesting. Some people might find Canberra quieter than big cities like Sydney or Melbourne. But for me, that's a good thing. It's especially nice in the winter when it's colder. The quietness helps me focus on my studies. Overall, for the past 5 months, living and studying in Canberra has been a great experience. It's a place that supports learning and offers a peaceful environment to enjoy.
What has it been like living on ANU campus?
ANU campus life is vibrant and fulfilling. Picture yourself strolling through a campus buzzing with students, seamlessly integrating academia with nature. The campus hosts a range of events and boasts diverse clubs, enabling students to engage in multiple interests. My involvement in societies has resulted in friendships and enriching experiences. As a scholarship holder, I've found camaraderie and support in fellow scholars. ANU also provides easily accessible health and wellbeing services that have been crucial for my mental and physical balance. The facilities, from counselling services to a fully-equipped gym, help students maintain a healthy lifestyle. In short, ANU offers a dynamic, engaging, and supportive campus life that fosters academic excellence and personal growth.
Why did you choose ANU?
I chose ANU primarily for its stellar reputation, especially in the field of public policy. Being the top university in Australia for this discipline, it was a natural choice given my academic interests. The potential to learn from leading experts and engage with policy issues on a global scale was a prospect too appealing to pass up.
ANU also offers excellent networking opportunities. The chance to connect with a diverse group of students, academics, and professionals from around the world is invaluable. It opens doors to collaborations, internships, and future job prospects. Finally, my plan for further study, particularly pursuing a PhD, was another reason for choosing ANU. I was drawn to the university's robust research environment and the chance to learn from and work alongside renowned scholars in my field.
How did your scholarship influence your student journey?
Being awarded the Australia Award Scholarship had a profound influence on my student journey. Financially, it was a significant relief. Knowing that my tuition, living expenses, and other related costs were covered, I could fully concentrate on my studies without worrying about financial strain. This allowed me to maximise my academic performance and engagement with university life.
Moreover, the scholarship enhanced my university experience beyond just the financial aspect. Being a part of the scholarship community, I found a network of motivated and supportive individuals. We shared experiences, exchanged ideas, and often collaborated on projects, enriching my academic and social life. Finally, the scholarship also provided me with unique opportunities such as attending special workshops, networking events, and personal development programs. These experiences have broadened my horizons, enriched my skillset, and boosted my confidence.
What has your learning experience been like? Who or what has helped or inspired you?
My learning experience at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific has been challenging, rewarding, and inspiring. The pace was rapid and the workload demanding, which initially was a bit of a struggle. However, with time and dedication, I found my rhythm and managed to adapt to the academic rigour. In this journey, I was fortunate to receive invaluable help from various individuals. Professor Peter Whiteford was a significant pillar of support when it came to assignments. His guidance and insights not only improved my academic work but also deepened my understanding of the subject matter.
Mark Badger, the Academic Skills Advisor, also played a crucial role. His advice on assignments was extremely helpful in honing my academic writing and research skills, crucial tools in the university environment. From the administrative side, Liz Ingram and Ngan Le were instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition into ANU. They guided me through processes and were always ready to address any concerns. Their support not only eased my academic journey but also motivated me to strive for excellence. I've come to see these challenges as stepping stones towards my academic and personal growth. Their inspiration has been a major part of my success and satisfaction at the College.
Have you lived in a group house off campus? What was that like?
Living off-campus in a group house with an American and Australian has been an enriching experience. It has provided me a unique perspective into different cultures and ways of life right from my living room. My housemates are friendly and respectful, which makes our living environment harmonious and enjoyable. Living in a group house has offered me the opportunity to develop my independence. From managing my expenses to sharing household chores, it has honed my life skills. It's a blend of responsibilities and freedoms that, I believe, prepares me for the future.
One of the aspects I love the most about this arrangement is the sense of community. We observed special events like Easter, a celebration that I hadn't experienced back in Vietnam. This has made my off-campus living experience not just a practical arrangement, but a home away from home. In essence, choosing to live off-campus in a group house has been beneficial, both in terms of personal growth and building a global perspective.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with future students?
As a student from Vietnam, my journey to ANU has been filled with intriguing experiences, fulfilling challenges, and notable accomplishments. I am passionate about public policy, and the decision to join the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, a leading institution in this field, was influenced by this passion. In my free time, I enjoy exploring Canberra's beautiful landscapes, delving into its rich cultural scene, and connecting with people from different walks of life.
The journey wasn't without its hurdles. Adapting to the rigorous academic workload of the College and the cultural shift was challenging initially. However, with time, perseverance, and the supportive ANU community, I was able to overcome these hurdles. The experience has made me more resilient and adaptable - qualities that I believe are essential for personal and professional success.
My greatest achievement at ANU has been the academic progress I've made and the personal growth I've experienced. I've broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding of public policy, and built lasting relationships.
For future students considering ANU, I would say that this university offers a unique blend of world-class education, diverse experiences, and a supportive community. It's a place that challenges you, supports you, and ultimately shapes you into a better version of yourself. Whether you're pursuing studies in public policy like me, or any other field, ANU provides an environment that nurtures growth and success.
