Chinese Curriculum Innovation
Practical Teaching

This project is aimed at developing innovative teaching proposals for Chinese at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The China and Korea Centre of the Faculty of Asian Studies and the ANU China Institute will host teachers from around Australia at the ANU in Canberra as part of a program to enhance the teaching of Chinese. Fellows involved in this project would be able to integrate their work with existing China Institute projects which are ongoing, eg. Chinese Studies Online, China Heritage Project.

Chinese Teachers Fellowships

In 2009, and possibly thereafter, the ANU Faculty of Asian Studies China Centre and the ANU China Institute will be making a number of grants and hosting in Canberra a number of secondary and primary teachers of Chinese from across Australia, for periods of varying lengths.

These 'teacher-fellows in residence' will be able to spend time reflecting on and writing about their own experience with the teaching of Chinese in a school context, while at the same time benefiting from contacts with the ANU's wide array of China-scholars, in such fields as: language, literature, popular culture, art, gender studies, history, philosophy, religion, economics, environmental studies, political and social studies, international relations and law.

They will also be able to involve themselves with the major ongoing project, Chinese Studies Online, jointly being developed by the ANU, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a number of other universities worldwide. It is the intention of the ANU to make available free of charge to schools across Australia the resources of this website, and to involve them in its development in especially in relation to language learning.

Special consideration will be given to teachers from more than one institution who propose to apply in collaboration.

The grants will cover airfares, accommodation costs and a per diem allowance. The fellows will be accommodated within the China Institute, and will have full use of the university's library facilities. Where the school concerned requires a pro rata payment to release a teacher, this expense will also be considered. In appropriate cases, the grants may also cover additional travel expenses for teachers wishing to liaise with other schools.

Applications: Any serving teachers wishing to apply for a fellowship in 2009 are invited to apply to the ANU China Institute using the application form.

Please send applications to the Institute by March 2, 2009: chinainstitute@anu.edu.au.
