Overview - Undergraduate Study
At the ANU, the Faculty of Asian Studies is the principal location for undergraduate teaching about China. The Faculty's Undergraduate Program has courses on China's language, script, linguistics, history, literature and society. The Chinese language major of the Faculty is taught in the China & Korea Centre while non-language majors are taught in the Centre for Asian Societies and Histories. Courses taught in these two centres are open to students taking Asian Studies degrees in the Faculty of Asian Studies as well as students enrolled in other Faculties. Undergraduate students (based either inside or outside the Faculty of Asian Studies) can combine specialist courses in the Faculty of Asian Studies with more general courses in history, linguistics, economics, anthropology, sociology, etc, taught elsewhere in the university, thus tailoring their degree to address their specific interests. The Centre's aim is to equip students with the linguistic and cultural competence needed to function effectively in the Chinese world, and the education to enable them to understand it in depth. The Centre offers intensive language study in its Chinese Language Major as part of its China degree programs. Students wishing to advance their language to a higher standard may enrol in the specialist Bachelor of Asian Studies (Chinese), which includes a year spent in immersion language studies in the Chinese world. In addition to Modern Standard Chinese or Putonghua (Mandarin), the Centre also teaches Classical Chinese, essential for students wishing to pursue serious studies in Chinese culture. The Centre for Asian Societies and Histories offers a range of courses covering different aspects of the Asia-Pacific region. Majors in the Centre relvant to the study of China include: |
